By Atty. Herson S. Valmores
Dean, College of Law

Amidst a devastating casualty rate (especially among freshmen) in the College of Law, ten (10) of its students stood up to show what academic excellence means. While most of their contemporaries aim for mere passing mark, these students managed to wade through the demands of their subjects during the FIRST SEMESTER of SCHOOL YEAR 2010-2011 with flying colors, thereby making them a cut above the rest. In recognition of their achievement, their inclusion in the roster of scholars and dean’s listers was approved by the Committee on Scholarships, Grants and Awards chaired by the University President, Rev. Fr. RENILLO H. STA. ANA, during its deliberation held on 4 December 2010.

Of the ten students, three of them were given full-tuitional scholarship grants:

Mr. Addauan is a consistent academic achiever. A salutatorian of the SMU Science High School Class of 2005, he went on to obtain his Political Science degree, Magna Cum Laude, from the Saint Mary’s University in 2009. He immediately pursued his graduate studies after graduation and obtained his Innovative Master in Public Administration (IMPA) in June 2010. He is presently working at the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) at the Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Capitol.

On the other hand, Ms. Odon is the valedictorian of SMU High School Class of 2000 and holds a baccalaureate degree in Business Economics from the University of the Philippine in Diliman. Finally, Ms. Tugadi is a product of Sta. Teresita’s Academy in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya and holds a baccalaureate degree in Philosophy from Saint Louis University in Baguio City.

Four law students were also given half-tuitional scholarship grants:

All but Mr. Madamba obtained their baccalaureate degrees from Saint Mary’s University. In the case of Ms. Calulot, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree in 2007. Ms. Mateo, on the other hand, got her Political Science degree, Cum Laude, in 2008. Meanwhile, after graduating as the Salutatorian of Class 2004 of Uddiawan National High School, Ms. Eugenio went on to obtain her Criminology degree in 2008, Cum Laude. She placed 7th in the 2008 Criminology Board Examinations. Finally, Mr. Madamba, an engineer by profession, is a graduate of Saint Louis University (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, 2001) and presently works at the Provincial Engineering Office at the Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Capitol. Before deciding to enter the law school, he pursued his graduate studies at the Technological University of the Philippines.

Three other law students were cited as Dean’s listers:

A certified public accountant, Ms. Maddela obtained her accounting degree from the Divine Word College of Laoag City. On the other hand, Mr. Monje, an engineer, presently works at the Provincial Engineering Office at the Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Capitol. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Baguio. Finally, Ms. Sagun finished at the top of her class at the Lamo National High School before proceeding to complete her degree in Computer Engineering from the AMA Computer University in Quezon City.

The academic achievers of the College of Law will be honored, along with their fellows from other colleges, on 12 January 2011 at the Tonus Gym.
