Junior HRM and Tourism students experience Shipboarding  and attend

Manila seminars & exposures, May 2015

With the objective of providing the students with actual scenarios on the housekeeping, food and beverages services / dining, and front office operations, an enhancement activity for interested 3rd year HTM students was conducted from May 24-29, 2015. Thirty-seven (37) HRM and seven         (7) Tourism junior students participated in the Shipboarding or ApEx (Apprenticeship by Experience Onboard), and the Manila Trainings/Seminar and Exposure. This supplemented students more insights on how theories, which are being taught inside the classrooms, are applied. Furthermore, students were able to practically observe how the real world of the Hospitality and Tourism industry work, which eventually provides them with invaluable learning through the attendance of seminars and exposures on the latter days of the set enhancement activity.

 

The group underwent a comprehensive 3-day immersion from May 24-26, 2015 at 2Go’s vessel, MV Saint John Paul (SJP) II with the route Manila-Cebu-Cagayan de Oro-Cebu-Manila. Oceanlink Institute, a 2Go training arm for HRM, Tourism and Maritime student exposures, had assigned      Mr. Edward Grijalde as the Shipboard Training Officer. Mr. Grijalde, a seaman himself working with international cruise lines on the restaurant department, aside from the initial exposures in the domestic arena, who throughout the shipboarding had facilitated the orientation, grouping, monitoring and evaluation of both the students and the whole activity.

 

Hands-on training or a taste on how to work on various departments of the ship’s hotel division namely the front office, housekeeping, food and beverage, kitchen and the Quick Mart (a convenience store) were scheduled on rotation for the eight groups to experience with. The three day immersion provided the students a realization of the difficulty of working onboard, yet accepted the fact that the noble tasks/jobs on ships are as equally difficult as any job may demand.

 

The group disembarked on May 27 in Manila Port. From the 27th to the 29th, a series of seminars and exposures were attended. May 27 was scheduled for a Manila City historical tour visiting the Philippine National Museum, the Manila Cathedral and one of the country’s UNESCO world heritage site, the San Agustin Church. May 28 was set for the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria and Holiday Inn Manila Galleria’s Stay and Learn program focusing on the discussion of topics in        (1) introduction to InterContinental Hotels Group (2) Front Office Operations with Opera System Training (3) Housekeeping Operations with Bed Making and (4) Tour Costing and Tour Guiding held at the Emerald A Function Room of the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, as managed by the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). This venue is just a floor away from where the group has checked-in which is the Holiday Inn Galleria. In the afternoon, a food safety seminar and bar tour was allotted at the Chilli’s in Quezon City. And on the 29th, the group headed for a museum tour at the Philippine Air Force property before culminating with a factory/company tour of Gardenia, known brand of bread, where the students witness the procedure on the bread’s production.

 

This enhancement activity provided the participating students invaluable learning experience supplementing the varied subjects taken in the university. Moreover, the students enjoyed the flow in of information and experiences that hasl definitely made them a more learned individual. These benefits surely accrue for a better future or professional works in the hospitality and tourism industry.
