To realize the vision/mission of the Institute of Natural Sciences (INS) of intensifying the science culture of the faculty, staff, and students of the science community in Region 2, a Regional Seminar in Microbiology with the theme, "Microbes: Treasure Trove of Wonders", was conducted last October 1, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Center of Saint Mary’s University (SMU). This activity was a joint project of INS, and of Fungal and Systematics Group of the Research Center for the Natural Sciences of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) – Manila.

The objectives of the said seminar were the following:
  1. To be aware of the status and challenges of the Fungal Diversity in the Philippines;
  2. To realize the relevance of microorganisms in cleaning and managing environmental wastes problem; and
  3. To value the significance of mycroflora, marine fungi, and fungal endophytes as potential source of active natural products and active metabolites.
The topics that were discussed by the resource speakers during the seminar included the following: "Exploring Philippine Diversity: Status and Challenges". This was discussed by Dr. Rer. Nat. Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, an Associate Professor of UST. The graduate students of Dr. dela Cruz also presented their paper on “Bioremediation: Microbes tidying Up of the Neighborhood”, “Marine Fungi from Algae: Untapped Sources of Active Natural Products”, and “Rising Up the Challenges of Time: Philippine Microflora and the Need for Conservation”. These researches were presented by Mr. Jeremy Martin O. Torres, Ms. Marie Grace B. Lavadia, and Ms. Sittie Aisha B. Macabago, respectively. Furthermore, the topic on “Fungal Endophytes: Underexplored Treasure Troves of Metabollites” was also elucidated by Mrs. Melfei E. Estada, a faculty member of SMU – INS.

This regional seminar was attended by 159 participants from the different schools in Region 2 such as Don Bosco National High School, Isabela State University, Lamo National High School, Quirino General High School, St. Catherine’s School, St. Louis School, St. Paul University, School of St. Joseph the Worker, St. Mary’s University, and University of St. Louis Tuguegarao.
