Training on Indigenization of Instructional Materials (IMS)

The School of Education (SOE) of Saint Mary’s University in partnership with the Department of
Education, Division of Nueva Vizcaya held a two-day seminar-workshop on “ Indigenizing Instructional &Learning Materials for MTB-MLE Classroom”for the elementary teachers of PRIME ( Philippines’
Response to Indigenous Peoples’ and Muslim Education) recipient schools at the Pedro Calungsod
Hall, Saint Mary’s University, May 15-16, 2013.Fifty elementary teachers and some school
administrators from Kayapa, Kasibu, Dupax del Sur, Ambaguio and Sta Fe, Nueva Vizcaya participated
in the said seminar-workshop.

The two-day seminar-workshop aimed to discuss with the participants some theories, framework and principles of materials design; engaged them in the creation of instructional materials (IMs) which can help them optimize learning and challenged them to innovate, localize/indigenize their IMs to respond to the needs of the MTB-MLE classroom.

Led by Dr. Ma.Cristeta M. Aduca, the SOE academic dean, the seminar-workshop is a collaborative
effort of the resource speakers who came from three departments of the university. From the
English Department; Mrs. Mabel D. Mamaoag talked about the Theories that Guide MTB-MLE/ What
MTB-MLE is and What it is not; from the Professional Education Department, Ms. Federicia C.
Calauagan discussed How to Make a Big Book; Mrs. Marianne C. Eugenio, from the Social Sciences Department, dwelt on Pictionary/Picto-alphabet Making.

Mr. Louie B. Burgos (Using IlocoSongs asInstructional Material); Mrs. Myla R. Duenas(Foldables and aperfolding: Materials in Teaching Mathematics Concepts) and
Mr. Elizer B. Hernandez (Writing Poems -Daniw)are all teachers from the Grade School.

This training was supervised by Mrs. Evelyn Ramos, Education Supervisor for Social Studies, focal person of PRIME, Department of Education, Division of Nueva Vizcaya.

Meanwhile, Ms. Karen Joy P. Ruiz, a student teacher, had her demonstration teaching in Mother Tongue.
The seminar-workshop culminated by the participants’ presentation of their outputs. The training
expenses were shouldered by PRIME Central Office.


 TRANSLATING TIME. The participants localizes some familiar English and Filipino stories in Filipino in their own dialect.
