Dean, School of Health Sciences

In a streak of successful accomplishments of the School of Health Sciences, a very significant recognition was recently received by one of its faculty members. Assistant to the Dean Mildred C. Marilao, RN, RM, MSN, was one among the 25 midwives nationwide who were selected in the Johnson and Johnson's Search for Most Outstanding Midwives of the Philippines. The award was presented by Patricia M. Gomez, RM, President of the IMAP and Zinnia Rivera, the President and Managing Director of Johnsons and Johnsons, Inc. Philippines.

Marilao participated, as a prize, in the Midwives Leadership Development Program, a 3-day leadership training seminar aimed at developing the frontline workers to be effective facilitator and leaders in their respective communities. The seminar was conducted at the National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions Auditorium, University of the Philippines, Manila.

Marilao successfully hurdled the very competitive national search which was based on educational qualification, commitment to the midwifery profession, exemplary performance as a leader as an outstanding Midwife educator, clinical and teaching competence. She was honored during the opening ceremonies of the Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines Annual Convention which was held last October 15-17, 2009 at the Manila Hotel.

The convention ended with lots of learning and inspiration for all the midwives in the country to continue doing their best to provide the best service they can give to the people of the community and to be a role model to the young midwives, “the world needs Midwives now more than ever”, therefore continue to be a partner in serving the people.

Marilao, one of the senior faculty members of the School of Health Sciences, started her career at SMU as a college secretary from 2000-2001, became a faculty member from 2001-2008, promoted as the Midwifery Coordinator from 2008-2009, and as the Assistant to the Dean this school year.

As a proof of her competence to meet international nursing standards, she successfully passed the National Council for Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN,USA), more popularly known as the US Nursing State Board Exam, early this year.
