SHS Dean Attends Nursing Faculty Development Conference in San Diego

By Jhordin James C. Montegrico , RN, MSN
Dean, School of Health Sciences

As part of the institution and departmental thrust to strengthen human resource development program through relevant and quality faculty development programs and to further develop a nursing curriculum that produces globally-comparable nurses with the ultimate aim of developing a curriculum that is internationally-recognized, the Dean of the School of Health Sciences, Jhordin James C. Montegrico, RN, MSN, represented the university in the Mosby's Faculty Development Institute Annual Conference in San Diego, California, USA last January 3-5, 2010.

The conference was attended by nurse educators from all over the United States and the Dean was the sole Philippine participant. Speakers on this conference were nursing experts and nursing leaders in the United States.

Learning trends in international nursing education, from test construction to clinical simulations, from strategies of clinical teaching to legal issues in nursing education, the Dean hopes to further strengthen the professional competencies of the faculty members by sharing the best-practices in international nursing education to the university's nursing faculty members. Having attended the same conference in San Francisco, California, USA in 2008 as a faculty member in a nursing program in the United States, he realized the significant impact this continuing education has on the professional development of faculty members.

This is in part a move to make the SMU nursing curriculum more responsive to the needs and demands of the global nursing market. As more Marian nurses are employed globally, the need to make the nursing curriculum at par with global standards can be enhanced through this type of professional development activity.
