From a University Bus, to a Mobile Clinic!

As part of the community extension services of Saint Mary’s University (SMU), the School of Health Sciences (SHS) has launched the Mother and Child Mobile Clinic on August 29, 2014.

The mobile clinic was a result of a feasibility study conducted by faculty members of the SHS led by Mrs. Magdalena A. Juan, officer-in-charge of SHS. The results of the study reveal that due to the lack of knowledge on motherhood and child care, there is a higher risk of death among mothers and children.

The mobile clinic aims to provide a free medical care to the underprivileged people living in the remote areas of Nueva Vizcaya and its neighboring provinces. According to Mrs. Juan, they are planning to conduct their first visit early next year and the first beneficiaries will be the residents of Barangay Quezon, Solano, Nueva Vizcaya which is the adopted barangay of the SHS.

The mobile clinic planned to provide basic medical necessities will also be a vehicle for the students’ learning
experiences.

With regards to the students’ learning experiences, the SHS also inaugurated a Massage Therapy Laboratory for the students on the same day. Located at the 3rd floor of the Rev. John Van Bauwel Building in rooms L302 and L303. This fully equipped facility may enable students to practice their profession. Interested individuals who want a free massage may go there for scheduled sessions. #
