Criminology Program to Undergo PACUCOA Preliminary Survey on July 29-31, 2010

By Geraldine B. Bogatan

Last January 5, 2010, the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) came to Saint Mary’s University for the consultancy visit/ orientation for five undergraduate programs including the Criminology program under the School of Public Administration and Governance (SPAG). The accreditors were Dr. Esther Vedaña, Dr. Ligaya Braganza and Miss Sonia Dignadice with Dr. Vedaña serving as chairman.

Said visit was in response to the letter of intent for program accreditation sent to the aforementioned accrediting agency. PACUCOA reviewed and evaluated the report in connection with the consultancy visit. In a letter to the former university president, Rev. Fr. Manuel D. Valencia, CICM, dated January 11, 2010, PACUCOA chairman Dr. Rosita L. Navarro gladly informed the Marian community that the Criminology program has satisfactorily complied with the accreditation requirements and that said program was ready to conduct self-survey in preparation for the preliminary visit. Upon receipt of the letter from the university president affirming the institution’s intention to push through with the preliminary visit, PACUCOA through its chairman, Dr. Navarro scheduled the preliminary visit on July 29-31, 2010.

The nine areas to be reviewed by the accreditors are the Philosophy and objectives, Faculty, Instruction, Library, Laboratories, Physical plant and facilities, Student services, Social orientation and community involvement, and Organization and administration.

It is noteworthy that the Criminology department of Saint Mary’s University ranked Number 1 in the entire Philippines, surpassing other schools aspiring for the top rank in the overall school ranking under Bracket C (with 20-49 examinees) in the September 2009 Board Examination. Manifesting its feat as a top performing school, hereunder are the passing rates in the Licensure Examination for Criminologists administered by the Professional Regulation Commission.

Date of Licensure Examination SMU Passing Percentage National Passing Percentage
October 2007 85.71% 30.63%
March 2008 100% 27.94%
August 2008 88.24% 33.71%
April 2009 100% 31.59%
September 2009 95.45% 35.69%
April 2010 100% 31.66%

In addition, the department complied with the minimum requirements on Criminology equipment and facilities required by CMO 21 series of 2001. In fact, it takes pride in having a first class indoor firing range located at Barangay Masoc, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. Other facilities include the fully equipped defensive tactics room, a spacious photography room, criminalistics room and the permanent crime scene room.

With the foregoing merits and the compliance to accreditation requirements, the department aspires for the candidate status in the accreditation levels and eventually become capable of acquiring accredited status within two years.
