The School of Health and Natural Sciences of Saint Mary’s University, envisions to become a leading health care educational institution that aims to produced globally competent health care professionals, and a science resource center that will develop excellent, innovative Christian Science experts who can transform lives through its mission.

MISSION

The School of Health & Natural Sciences aims to produce professionally prepared health care providers and professionals in various areas of natural sciences who are imbued with the Christian spirit of service, social insight and commitment, and humanitarian dedication.

OBJECTIVES

The School of Health and Natural Sciences aims to:

  1. prepare the young person for the humane and effective practice of health care in various settings by proper understanding of the principles and methods of modern scientific health services;
  2. prepare professionals who can conduct significant researches in the field of health care and natural sciences. 
  3. prepare professionals who may enroll for further studies in Medicine and other allied health science degree programs. 
  4. provide enough opportunities for active involvement in various programs in the health care and natural sciences and for actual practice in real situations and field work;
  5. provide the students with the broadest possible background of cultural and professional knowledge thus equipping them with the discipline and skills needed;
  6. inculcate Christian values necessary for the students to live a wholesome and productive life as professionals and as individuals.




HISTORY

The School of Health and Natural Sciences was the result of a restructuring of the eight schools in the University based on allied disciplines in School Year 2016-2017. The Center for Natural Sciences was merged with the School of Health Sciences which was then comprised of the Nursing, Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory Science departments. The merged programs allowed a collaboration among faculty and staff geared towards providing the community with health professionals educated to provide the best quality of health service.

Being inspired by its mission and driven by excellence, over the years, the School of Health and Natural Sciences was able to maintain its excellent standing in the national and regional arena. A 100% licensure exam rates were remarkably garnered by the Nursing Department in a number of Nurse Licensure Examination since it started in 2001. The new two programs BMLS (2016), and BSP (2018) were also able to produce a 100% exam rating. The Nursing Department has the following track of excellent records, based on the December 2011 NLE result, the school was recognized as top 8  and in December 2012 NLE as Top 10 Nursing School in the country. The outstanding performance of the NLE in 2013 and 2014 ranked SMU Nursing as Top 8. In the November 2022 NLE, the Nursing department was awarded as the Top 7 performing school in the Philippines with a passing rate of 98.78%. The BS Pharmacy program opened in 2012 also gained recognition as top 7 performing school in the Philippines during the July 2021 Pharmacists Licensure Examination (PhLE). 

The School shows its commitment to excellence with the Topnotchers being produced, from the BS Nursing in the years 2001 (Top 17), 2008 (Top 10), 2010 (Top 8), 2011 (Top 4, 2-Top 8 and Top 10), 2012 (Top 2), 2013 (Top 5, Top 7, Top 8 and 2 Top 10) and in 2014 (Top 3 and Top 9). In 2021 BS Medical Laboratory Science was able to produce a Topnotcher in the person of Mr. Giles D. Dumangeng ranking as Top 9. The program of Biology is also committed to quality education with its Level III PAASCU Accreditation together with the Nursing Program with its Level II PAASCU accreditation. 

Dr. Arlene L. Tabaquero was the appointed Dean of SHANS in August 2020 and is serving the school up to the present.
