Navigating the Mind: SEAIT’s Mental Health Awareness Talk

The School of Engineering, Architecture, and Information Technology (SEAIT) recently held its annual SEAIT Week, featuring a variety of activities aimed at student development and well-being. As part of the celebration, the Guidance and Testing Office was invited to deliver an informative session on mental health awareness, attended by students from the SEAIT Department.

In anticipation of the upcoming National Mental Health Month this October, the talk was held on September 29, 2025, at the Sacred Heart Center. The session was facilitated by Mrs. Jennifer Ann M. Torres, a Guidance Counselor from the SMU Guidance and Testing Office, who shared valuable insights on the importance of understanding and caring for one’s mental well-being.

Mrs. Torres emphasized the concept of the mental health continuum—a model that views mental health as a dynamic spectrum, ranging from a state of well-being to significant mental health challenges, with individuals moving back and forth depending on life circumstances, coping skills, and support systems. She also highlighted key protective factors, effective coping strategies, and introduced a practical grounding technique activity to help students manage stress and regulate their emotions.

The session was both engaging and educational, as students actively participated in discussions and activities. Many expressed that they gained a deeper understanding of their own mental health and learned practical ways to strengthen resilience.

The observance of Mental Health Month serves as a timely reminder that mental health matters just as much as physical health—and that it is both important and acceptable to speak openly about one’s struggles and seek support when needed.
