SMU is Top 10 sustainable Phil HEI in UI GreenMetric Rankings 2024

Saint Mary’s University (SMU) has achieved a historic milestone by earning a spot in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024, marking its first-ever participation in the prestigious global assessment of sustainability practices. SMU ranked a remarkable 470th out of 1,477 higher education institutions from 95 countries, with an overall score of 6,795 points.

In the Philippines, SMU emerged as the 10th most sustainable university and achieved the top rank as a sustainable campus among Region 02 participating Higher Education Institutions.

The 15th edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024 evaluates universities’ sustainability efforts across six key categories: Settings and Infrastructure (SI), Energy and Climate Change (EC), Waste Management (WS), Water Management (WR), Transportation (TR), and Education and Research (ED). This year’s rankings included 1,477 institutions worldwide, underscoring the growing commitment of universities to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

SMU achieved remarkable scores in the UI GreenMetric categories: Settings and Infrastructure (1,025), Energy and Climate Change (1,450), Waste Management (1,125), Water Management (410), Transportation (1,335), and Education and Research (1,450). These results placed SMU among the Silver Cluster of performing universities, highlighting its outstanding dedication to sustainability initiatives and eco-friendly practices. This recognition reflects SMU’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations and academic programs, from promoting clean energy practices and responsible waste disposal to fostering a culture of environmental education and research, aligning with global sustainability goals.
