SMU receives citation for outstanding global performance

In the 4th regular session of the 12th Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Nueva Vizcaya, Saint Mary’s University was awarded a Commendation for its outstanding global performance in the 2025 World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI).

Established in 2018, WURI was created as a response to the usual rankings that rely heavily on academic metrics. It focuses on practical impact, innovation, and the viability of initiatives over academic reputation or citation counts. WURI checks on educational institutions based on their real-world impact on industry and society, highlighting innovations in areas such as education, research, and social involvement. Criteria include innovativeness, implementability, and impact.

In the 2025 WURI, SMU ranked 10th in the world in university brand and reputation, raking 3rd in the Philippines; 12th in the world in empowerment-based management, ranking 6th in the Philippines; 18th in the world in infrastructure / technologies, ranking 6th in the Philippines, and 252nd overall global rank out of 1,072, as compared to the previous year’s 273rd ranking.

Sponsored by the Hon. Eunice Galima-Gambol, the resolution mentions that these achievements of the University are manifestations of SMU’s “steadfast commitment to student-centered programs, progressive leadership, and meaningful community engagement that collectively enhances both local and global academic landscapes; such a prestigious achievement elevates the standing not only of Saint Mary’s University but also the Province of Nueva Vizcaya, proudly affirming its role as a hub of academic innovation and global competence.”

SMU receives citation

In the awarding rites on August 11, 2025 at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Session Hall in the Capitol Compound, SMU President Dr. John Octavious S. Palina accepted the Commendation, saying that Saint Mary’s University has always been striving to be in the international arena… not only for SMU but also for the beloved Province of Nueva Vizcaya. “May our partnership grow, and may we work together for the betterment of Nueva Vizcaya.”

This citation is proof that Saint Mary’s University is true to its commitment to excellence and dedication to its mission to serve humanity through the thrusts of the WURI and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially on Goal 4: Quality Education, Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, Goal 16, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

In all of these, SMU stands strong and steadfast in being “Inspired by Mission, Driven by Excellence.”
