Self-defense seminar workshop held at SMU

In response to the growing need for personal safety, empowerment, and holistic well-being, a self-defense seminar workshop was held on April 30, 2025, at the Cornelius Tonus Gymnasium. The whole-day event brought together students and professionals for an immersive, hands-on learning experience, equipping participants with essential skills to protect themselves and make informed decisions in high-risk situations.
The seminar was organized with a deep sense of purpose, aiming to teach practical self-defense techniques and cultivate a proactive mindset grounded in confidence, awareness, and discipline. In an era marked by increasing concerns over gender-based violence, harassment, and vulnerability, this event underscored the importance of personal security and preparedness in everyday life.
The seminar featured three speakers who shared valuable insights. Mr. Arnel L. Gamata introduced foundational self-defense techniques, risk assessment, and situational awareness. Ms. Diwata V. Donato led a session on media literacy, where she discussed how to effectively fact-check sources, identify misinformation, and navigate the digital landscape responsibly. She highlighted the importance of critical thinking and how individuals can use media literacy to protect themselves from harmful or misleading information that poses risks in real-world situations. The third speaker, Ms. Leslie Divina, explored the psychological aspects of confrontation, focusing on emotional regulation and stress response during critical moments.
The seminar highlighted the importance of physical preparedness and mental resilience, especially in today’s world, where personal safety concerns are increasingly relevant. Events like this are essential in empowering individuals to control their security, build confidence, and promote a culture of personal responsibility.
Aligned with the United Nations Tourism Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the seminar contributed to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).
The event embodied the 3 I’s of SMU HTM: Inspire by motivating participants to take proactive steps toward their safety and well-being; Influence by shaping a mindset of empowerment and responsibility toward self-defense and media literacy; and Innovate by introducing dynamic, relevant discussions and interactive sessions that fostered growth. The event served as a valuable platform for personal development, further reinforcing the role of education and empowerment in building safer, more resilient communities.
