SMU Receives Philippine Quality Award at National Level, Marks Historic Milestone

Saint Mary’s University (SMU) has made history as it was formally conferred the Philippine Quality Award (PQA) – Recognition for Commitment to Quality Management, National Level. The prestigious honor was presented at Malacañang Palace by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, on behalf of the Office of the President of the Philippines.

This recognition affirms SMU’s steadfast commitment to quality, innovation, and continuous improvement across its academic and administrative processes—cementing its role as a model of excellence in Philippine higher education.

Representing the University in this landmark event were members of the SMU’s PQA Committee Chairs and Co-Chairs, led by University President Dr. John Octavious Palina. He was joined by Vice President for Administration Dr. John Tayaban; Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Moises Alexander Asuncion; former Vice President for Finance and Treasurer Mrs. Venica Acosta; HRDO Director Mrs. Ruby Lyn Nuestro; IDQAO Director Mrs. Pearl Via Coballes; and Assistant Director for IDQAO Dr. Harrison Villanueva.

The Philippine Quality Award, patterned after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award of the United States, is the highest national recognition for exemplary organizational performance in the country. Receiving this distinction underscores SMU’s excellence in leadership and governance, workforce engagement, process management, and societal contributions.

This milestone places SMU among the ranks of premier institutions recognized for their unwavering pursuit of quality and excellence. More than a recognition of its past and present achievements, the award sets a bold standard for SMU’s future directions as it continues to advance education and service in the Cagayan Valley region and beyond.
