SMU Breaks Ground for New Science Building

Saint Mary’s University held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Science Building on September 20, 2024. The building will house the Medical Technology, Nursing, Pharmacy programs and the Center for Natural Sciences.

The ceremony began with a prayer led by Rev. Fr. Alberto I. Tamisen, CICM, setting a hopeful tone for this momentous occasion.

The event was attended by Dr. John Octavious S. Palina, University President; Rev. Fr. Philip A. Yu Jr., CICM, Vice President for Mission and Identity; Dr. Moises Alexander Asuncion, Vice President for Academic Affairs; and Mrs. Venica S. Acosta, Vice President for Finance and Treasurer. Their collective commitment underscores the university’s vision for fostering innovation and academic excellence.

The event was also attended by key faculty members, including Dr. Joman J. Baliton, Dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences; Mrs. Shiela Ramos, Department Head of Medical Laboratory Science; Dr. Sherylou Benig, Department Head of Nursing; and Mrs. Melchora Bautista, Department Head of Pharmacy. Their presence reflects the collaborative effort among various departments to support the growth of the university.

Representatives from the construction team, including Engr. Rico T. Tiongson and Ar. Junie Anne B. Bungubung, were acknowledged for their crucial roles in bringing this project.

Mr. Sherwin Marciano, Head of the Physical Plant, Properties Development, and Maintenance Office, along with Engr. Jojo C. Mariano from the School of Engineering, Architecture, and Information Technology, contributed their expertise to ensure the building meets the highest standards of design and functionality.

This new Science Building will not only provide state of the art facilities but also foster a learning environment that promotes research and innovation. As SMU embarks on this exciting journey, the university community looks forward to the positive impact this facility will have on students and the region.
