SMU Hosts Benchmarking Visit from University of the Assumption

Saint Mary’s University (SMU), through the Internationalization Office, hosted a benchmarking visit from the University of the Assumption (UA), Pampanga, on Dec. 11, 2025, to strengthen institutional collaboration and global engagement.
Representatives from UA were Mrs. Anele C. Mallari, RN, LPT, MAN, Dean of UA College of Nursing and Pharmacy, and Sr. Marissa Y. Figueroa, OP, MARE, Director of UA –Physical Plant and General Services.
The visit, led by Dr. Clara M. Gonzales, Head of Internationalization Office, together with Dr. Joman J. Baliton, Dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences, and Dr. Sherilou A. Benig, Head of the Department of Nursing, highlighted SMU’s internationalization initiatives, including Project Maalaga, and provided UA with insights into its implementation, recruitment, training, and support systems for nurse candidates preparing for employment in Belgium.
Importantly, the visit also highlighted the success of SMU’s partnership with Belgium, which has been a cornerstone of the project since its inception. This collaboration has opened pathways for Marian nurses to gain international opportunities, strengthened institutional credibility, and showcased SMU’s commitment to building sustainable, mutually beneficial partnerships that uplift communities and contribute to global health systems.
Discussions emphasized the alignment of processes, candidate assessments, and institutional support, highlighting SMU’s commitment to continuous improvement and sustainable development. The visit reaffirmed the shared vision of SMU and UA in cultivating globally competent professionals and advancing sustainable international partnerships aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
