SMU MBA students visit coop to enhance learning experience

The Management of Cooperative class, under the guidance of Dr. Loreta V. Garlitos, conducted an educational visit to Tam-an Banaue Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BMPC), located in Poblacion South, Solano on May 3, 2025. The visit aimed to deepen the students’ understanding of cooperative operations and best practices in the field.
The session was facilitated by Ms. Necy Bayaona Teh-op, Human Resources Manager of Tam-an BMPC, who welcomed the students and led an insightful presentation. She shared the inspiring story of the cooperative’s founding by Jose “Tam-an” D. Tomas, and its remarkable journey from humble beginnings to achieving its first billion-peso milestone. Ms. Teh-op detailed the challenges faced by the cooperative, including a critical period nearing bankruptcy. She said it was during this time that Mr. Tomas introduced the “4Ps to Success”: Prayer, Perseverance, Persistence, and Perspiration—principles that continue to guide the organization today.
The presentation also covered the cooperative’s organizational structure, key leadership roles, and expansion trajectory. Tam-an BMPC operates branches in 13 provinces, with a goal of reaching 100 branches by 2026. In addition to its core cooperative services, the organization has established several allied businesses offering diverse products and services. A significant portion of the session was devoted to showcasing Tam-an BMPC’s best practices, particularly in employee welfare and member engagement. The twelve MBA students expressed keen interest, engaging in a lively Q&A session. Financial inquiries were addressed by Ms. Herminia Cabo-Taguling, finance manager, and Ms. Susan D. Simbol, loans assistant.

Dr. Garlitos also shared thoughtful recommendations on improving and sustaining best practices, fostering an enriching exchange between the academic and cooperative communities. Students contributed suggestions to enhance future presentations, emphasizing the value of continued dialogue and collaboration.
The educational visit proved to be a meaningful experience – both informative and inspiring. It reinforced theoretical lessons with real-world insights and exemplified the powerful synergy between academic learning and community-based enterprise.
