URC Hosts Capacitation and Certification for Qualitative Data Analysts

To further strengthen the university’s research capability and promote excellence in qualitative research, the University Research Center (URC) successfully conducted the Capacitation and Certification of Qualitative Data Analysts on November 26, 2025, at Room AP202 (Computer Laboratory). The one-day program, held from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, aimed to enhance participants’ competence in qualitative data analysis and interpretation through hands-on exercises and a guided workshop.
The event officially opened with Mrs. Angela C. Garra, School of Accountancy and Business Research Coordinator, serving as the emcee. Miss Gelyne P. Gallangi, URC Staff, facilitated the registration and led the Opening Prayer, followed by Mrs. Geraldine Y. Ferreras, Nursing Research Coordinator, who delivered the Opening Remarks and Statement of Objectives. Mrs. Ferreras emphasized the importance of mastering qualitative data analysis to produce authentic, context-driven insights that strengthen the quality of academic research.
Afterward, Mrs. Cathelyn C. Mariano, Research Coordinator for Biology, Medtech, and Pharmacy, introduced the resource speaker, Dr. Christopher Allen S. Marquez, who led the day’s series of sessions. In the morning, Dr. Marquez revisited fundamental qualitative research methods, including interviews, focus groups, and observation, to reinforce participants’ understanding of diverse data-gathering approaches. Continuing, the participants took part in a hands-on session on Data Coding and Thematic Analysis, where they applied coding techniques to real datasets and collaboratively identified emerging themes.
Following the lunch break, the afternoon sessions focused on the Interpretation and Reporting of Qualitative Findings, during which Dr. Marquez discussed strategies for presenting results with clarity and analytical depth. The session emphasized ensuring alignment between data themes, research objectives, and narrative integrity.
Before closing, Mrs. Angela C. Garra facilitated the awarding of the certificate to the resource speaker. Ms. Ivonny Lorvin M. Adducul, School of Teacher Education and Humanities Research Coordinator, delivered the Closing Remarks, commending the participants’ enthusiasm and reaffirming URC’s dedication to organizing empowering research training programs that foster professional growth and academic excellence.
This capacitation program underscores URC’s unwavering commitment to advancing the analytical and interpretive skills of faculty and student researchers. By continually providing development opportunities, the University Research Center upholds Saint Mary’s University’s mission of producing high-quality, evidence-based research that contributes meaningfully to the advancement of academics and the community.
