Excellence Defined: SMU Wins Big at 1st Skills Olympics

LAMUT, IFUGAO – Saint Mary’s University (SMU) once again proved its excellence in the field of hospitality and tourism education, emerging as the Overall Champion at the 1st Tourism-Hospitality Invitational Convention and Skills Olympics. Held on March 30-31 at the Luis Hora Gymnasium, Ifugao State University – Lamut Campus, the event centered on the theme: “The Future of Tourism and Hospitality: The Power of 3Is—Innovate, Inspire, Impact.”
The first day was dedicated to a high-caliber seminar featuring industry luminaries. Students gained insights into the “3Is” through sessions led by Celebrity Chef Jion Carl M. Redoña, New Town Plaza Hotel GM Jonathan Barroga, and Cafe Fleur owner Ms. Reygene Buhong. Ms. Maria Agnes “Beng” Garcia, a distinguished Toastmaster and Zero-waste Advocate, inspired students toward sustainable excellence, while Mr. Dan Iran John M. Wico a F&B Specialist | Bartending and Barista Professional, also associated with MICAH, showcased the artistry of bartending.
The Marians dominated the competition floor on the second day, hauling multiple awards across various categories:
- Smackdown- Battle of the Brains (Gold Award): Kyneshie A. Dalpig, Pauleen Mae C. Belingon, and Andrea Jenice G. Acosta (Coaches: Ms. Aryan L. Yuzon & Ms. Rowena Vennessa G. Gayagoy).
- Flight Attendant Showmanship (Gold Award): Allia Jadyn B. Alviedo, Princess L. Ballesteros, and Kyla Monique R. De Castro (Coach: Ms. Aryan L. Yuzon).
- Klasika Kulinarya (Gold Award): Benjamin C. Miran, Jairoe A. Gamboa, and Krizza Gaile S. Alaman (Coach: Mrs. Jesusa Ana Maria F. Jacalne).
- Travel & Tour (Silver Award): Gabriel A. Lorenzo and Aika Lorene D. Bernardo (Coach: Ms. Rowena Vennessa G. Gayagoy).
For SMU, this victory is more than just a collection of trophies; it is a manifestation of Marian core values and virtues. By engaging with neighboring institutions, SMU fosters a culture of collaboration and healthy competition.
This participation directly aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
