SMU holds first Scholars' Day, unites Marian scholars in purpose

Saint Mary’s University (SMU), through the Office of the Vice President for Mission and Identity, successfully conducted its first-ever Scholars’ Day 2026 on April 9 at the Fr. Gerry Bouckaert Hall.

With the theme “Scholaboration: Igniting Purpose Beyond Privilege,” the event gathered Marian scholars in a celebration of unity, collaboration, and shared purpose.

In his opening remarks, Rev. Fr. Philip Yu Jr., CICM, Vice President for Mission and Identity, called on scholars to become more engaged in the university community and collaborate with one another toward a shared purpose. He emphasized that the Scholars’ Day is a testament to “scholaboration,” highlighting the collective effort of scholarship officers who worked together to organize the event.

Moreover, Scholarship staff Eufrecia Lucas shared that the event aims to empower Marian scholars and remind them that their scholarships come with responsibility.

“This event is meant to ignite something deeper within each of you-a clear sense of purpose, a stronger commitment to your goals, and a renewed understanding that your education is not only for personal success but also for service, leadership, and positive impact in the community,” she said.

The event also marked the launch of the Unified Scholars’ Organization, alongside the election of its first set of officers. Newly elected president Ryan Fernandez outlined his plans for the organization, focusing on building a strong foundation, addressing scholars’ concerns, and maximizing their potential.

“Para sa akin, the main goal right now is to lay down a very solid foundation. Being the first unified organization, gusto kong tutukan talaga natin ang pag-address sa mga concerns ng bawat iskolar at really focus on building their potential,” he said.

The program also featured guest speaker Nyl Aldrin Laguit, who facilitated the “Voices of Purpose” segment, where scholars shared personal stories of success and challenges. The activity encouraged participants to reflect on their purpose and deepen their commitment to contributing to society.
