SMU Nursing Alumni and Dean Publish Research in International Journal on Correctional Nursing

Saint Mary’s University (SMU) proudly recognizes its alumni Nicole Angelu S. Aranda, Jeshierlyn P. Baua, Rinoa Lei S. Guntalilib, and Janelle V. Pasamonte, together with Dr. Joman J. Baliton, Dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences, for their research publication entitled “Stress Experience and Coping Mechanisms of Female Inmates in BJMP: Implications to Correctional Nursing,” published in Frontiers of Nursing, Volume 13, Issue 2 (2026).
The study explored the stress experiences and coping mechanisms of female Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in a Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) facility in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines. Using a qualitative research design, the researchers interviewed ten female PDLs and analyzed their experiences through thematic analysis, guided by Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model.
Findings identified interpersonal conflicts, separation from family, legal delays, and challenging prison environments as major sources of stress. The participants employed various coping strategies, including emotional introspection, physical activities, religious practices, and seeking support from peers and family members.
The study emphasizes the need for holistic and responsive correctional nursing interventions to promote the mental well-being of female PDLs. Among its recommendations are conflict resolution programs, improved family communication, organized physical and group activities, and accessible mental health services. These insights may help correctional institutions and healthcare professionals develop interventions that support the well-being and rehabilitation of women in detention.
SMU congratulates its alumni and Dr. Baliton on this scholarly achievement. Their collaboration demonstrates the University’s continuing research engagement with its graduates and its commitment to advancing nursing knowledge, compassionate healthcare, and evidence-based practices that address the needs of vulnerable populations.
