The Civil Engineering Department of Saint Mary’s University  participated in the 48th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), held on July 8–9, 2026, at The Manila Hotel.

Representing the department in the Scientific Poster Presentation was Civil Engineering alumna Ms. Kassandra C. Laconico, who presented the research titled, An Experimental Investigation of Woven Bambusa vulgaris (Bamboo) as a Sustainable Alternative to Traditional Plywood.” The study explores the potential of woven bamboo as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional plywood, contributing to the development of innovative and environmentally responsible construction materials.

The research was authored by Kassandra C. Laconico, Aiza Lhie M. Ventura, Andrei Vinz R. Bautista, Jionas Neil L. Corpuz, with Engr. Aurus Jodeo C. Tiam serving as the research adviser.

Also representing the department were Engr. Jefrie T. Alindayu and Engr. Michelle Kyra Bautista-Balut, who participated in the event’s technical sessions. Their attendance provided valuable opportunities to gain insights into the latest scientific advancements, emerging technologies, and research innovations that can further strengthen engineering education, research, and professional practice.

The participation of the SMU Civil Engineering Department in this prestigious national scientific gathering reflects its unwavering commitment to research excellence, sustainability, and innovation.
