Beyond the Classroom: Building SDG-Driven Youth Leaders for Real-World Impact

The utilization project titled “Beyond the Classroom: Empowering Leaders through SDG-Focused Advocacy and Project Development for Real-World Impact” was implemented to translate research findings into concrete leadership development initiatives for student leaders across Nueva Vizcaya. Grounded in the results of an earlier empirical study on student leadership formation, the project focused on two strategic objectives: the organization of hybrid leadership trainings and workshops, and the review and integration of leadership-related topics in selected General Education courses such as Rizal, Contemporary World, and Ethics.
To accomplish the first strategic objective, asynchronous virtual meetings were conducted to provide flexible engagement with student leaders from six higher education institutions in the province. During these sessions, student leaders received notes on leadership and summaries of the empirical findings, which served as the basis for understanding their roles, competencies, and developmental needs. This virtual phase served as preparation for the culminating in-person activity.
The asynchronous meetings concluded with a face-to-face seminar-workshop held on December 6, 2025, in collaboration with MAT Social Studies students. The activity was attended by 84 student leaders and four faculty members representing six higher education institutions in Nueva Vizcaya. The seminar-workshop provided opportunities for hands-on learning, collaborative discussions, and guided project development aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. Through these engagements, participants strengthened their capabilities for effective, accountable, and development-oriented leadership.
For the second strategic objective, integration of leadership-related lessons was implemented in the General Education courses Rizal and The Contemporary World. In Rizal, topics such as the youth’s role in nation-building, civic responsibility, and the development of civic virtues were emphasized. In The Contemporary World, lessons related to global citizenship, sustainable development, and current global issues were enriched with leadership-oriented discussions and applied activities.
One of the outcomes of the project was a student-led proposal titled the Youth Accelerator Project. Its goals were to develop core leadership competencies such as communication, critical thinking, conflict resolution, and teamwork; foster civic engagement by encouraging youth to address community issues; cultivate ethical decision-making based on integrity, responsibility, and empathy; and establish a mentorship network linking youth with community and professional leaders. The proposal will be enhanced further and submitted to the Provincial Youth Development Council of Nueva Vizcaya for their perusal and appropriate action.
Overall, the utilization project successfully connected academic insights with practical, community-focused leadership development. By integrating research findings, instructional activities, and student-led initiatives, the project contributed to the formation of young leaders prepared to create meaningful real-world impact in alignment with sustainable development goals.
