School of Graduate Studies Conducts Seminar-Workshop on Patents and Intellectual Property

Last May 2, 2026, the School of Graduate Studies headed by Dean Gertrude G. Danao, successfully conducted the seminar-workshop entitled “Innovate, Protect, Commercialize: A Seminar-Workshop on Patents and Intellectual Property” at the APO Pilo Building, AP 202. Computer Laboratory Room.

The activity was organized as one of the activities of Linggo ng Lingkod at Likha 2026 with the theme, “Lingkod at Likha 2026: Harmonizing Public Services and Creativity through AI-Enhanced Research.”

The seminar-workshop gathered graduate students, faculty members, researchers, and aluni in an engaging learning session focused on strengthening awareness and understanding of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), patent protection, and research commercialization.

The event featured insightful discussions from the invited speaker, Engr. Teofilo M.  Sagabaen, Head of the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO), who shared valuable expertise on intellectual property protection, patentability, and innovation development.

The seminar covered the following important topics:

  • Fundamentals of Intellectual Property Rights
  • Types of Intellectual Properties
  • Criteria on Patentability and Prior Art Search
  • Potential Intellectual Properties from SMU
  • Filing Processes and Fees

Participants gained meaningful insights into safeguarding innovations, recognizing patentable works, and understanding the procedures involved in intellectual property registration and commercialization. The discussions also emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, and research excellence within the academic community.
