SMU Reaffirms Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

On Friday, July 24, 2026, the Ubbog ken Biag Alliance–Watershed Defenders for Life and Livelihood was launched at the Sacred Heart Center of Saint Mary’s University (SMU). As one of the alliance’s lead organizers, SMU joined indigenous peoples, faith-based organizations, academic institutions, civil society groups, and environmental advocates in promoting collective action to protect Nueva Vizcaya’s watersheds and natural resources.

Bishop Jose Elmer Mangalinao of the Diocese of Bayombong emphasized that protecting watersheds is a shared responsibility. He called on all sectors to unite in safeguarding God’s creation for present and future generations.

In his message, University President Dr. John Octavious Palina emphasized that Saint Mary’s University remains dedicated to spearheading these efforts through all the units and offices of the university, true to its commitment to integrating Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ into our campus operations, consistently prioritizing environmental stewardship and the protection of our home. “We always remind ourselves in the spirit of Laudato Si’ that our Catholic identity calls us to honor God’s creation by practicing active environmental care and stewardship. By being part of this alliance, we have strongly manifested that protecting God’s creation is not just our environmental goal, it is our moral responsibility. As the active defenders of life and livelihood in Nueva Vizcaya, and on behalf of the more than 8,500 students, faculty, staff, and administrators of SMU, we pledge our full support to this meaningful collaboration.”

The alliance aims to strengthen cooperation in protecting Nueva Vizcaya’s watersheds, mountains, and natural resources. The event concluded with solidarity pledges from frontline barricade leaders, the academe, religious institutions, and partner non-governmental organizations, reaffirming their shared commitment to safeguarding the province’s environment for future generations.
