SMU Accountancy Head Among First Graduates of Nationwide PICPA Teacher Certification Program

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya — Saint Mary’s University (SMU) celebrates a significant milestone in academic excellence as Mr. John Lindy R. Soriano, CPA, Head of the Accountancy Department, successfully completed the inaugural run of the Teacher Certification Program (TCP) spearheaded by the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA).

Organized through the PICPA Foundation and the PICPA Committee on Faculty Development and Research, in partnership with Colegio de San Juan de Letran – Manila, the initiative produced its very first batch of graduates from a select group of educators nationwide, spanning Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Formally titled the Education Units Certification Program, this rigorous 12-unit curriculum is a critical prerequisite mandated by the Professional Regulation Commission’s Board of Accountancy (BOA) for CPAs seeking formal accreditation as accounting teachers in the Philippines. The program bridges the gap between corporate practice and classroom instruction, recognizing that technical expertise alone does not guarantee effective teaching. Through this framework, the BOA ensures that accounting faculty possess foundational competencies in curriculum design, advanced instructional methods, and modern classroom assessment strategies.

Mr. Soriano’s achievement directly aligns with Saint Mary’s University’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). By ensuring academic leaders undergo formal pedagogical training, SMU guarantees top-tier instruction that rigidly prepares accountancy students for the CPA licensure exams. Ultimately, equipping future accountants with this high-caliber education fosters professional competency, driving economic growth and strengthening the region’s financial sector.

By producing an academic leader in this historic inaugural cohort, SMU solidifies its position as a premier institution for accountancy education in the region. The entire Marian community extends its warmest congratulations to Mr. John Lindy R. Soriano and all first-batch completers of the PICPA program, whose dedication to continuous professional development inspires excellence across the university. Caritas cum Scientia!
