The University Research Center (URC) of Saint Mary’s University (SMU) conducted the Comprehensive Research Orientations and Data Analysis Certification Exam on September 16 at the Apo Pilo Computer Lab, providing participants with training on research ethics, responsible artificial intelligence (AI) use, academic integrity, and research data analysis services.

The whole-day activity was divided into two sessions, with the morning program focusing on research orientations and training, followed by the certification examination in the afternoon.

The program opened with a prayer led by Ms. Jelie Anne C. Tallungan, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and the Vizcaya Hymn led by the AVP. Mr. David Cabonero, Director of the University Library and Research Center, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the continuing importance of human empathy and analytical skills in research despite the increasing use of AI technologies.

Moreover, Cabonero highlighted the role of academic integrity safeguards, including tools such as Turnitin, in maintaining the credibility and originality of research outputs. He noted that the responsible use of these safeguards contributes to the development of impactful studies aligned with the university’s mission and core values.

The morning session began with a discussion on Research Ethics led by Mrs. Gloria Vicky A. Antonio, who discussed the ethics review process, review timelines, and common vulnerability concerns encountered in research institutions. The session emphasized the importance of ethics review in ensuring that research undertakings are ethically sound, scientifically meritorious, and socially significant.

This was followed by a session on AI Research Guidelines facilitated by Dr. Melanie G. Sarmiento, Director of the University Research Center. Addressing the growing use of AI in academic research, Dr. Sarmiento discussed the university’s guidelines for responsible AI use and emphasized that AI must not be treated as the main author of a research output, as doing so constitutes a breach of academic integrity.

Furthermore, Mr. Mark Camonayan of the University Library oriented the participants on Turnitin and its features, particularly its applications in checking plagiarism and identifying AI-generated content. The morning session concluded with closing remarks from Mrs. Cathelyn C. Mariano, Natural Sciences Research Coordinator.

In the afternoon, the Data Analysis Certification Exam proper commenced with an opening prayer led by Engr. Rojan I. Reyes, SEAIT Research Coordinator, followed by an introduction from Dr. Sarmiento. The two-hour certification examination was conducted from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Following the examination, Miss Rhodora Aquino, University Statistician, oriented the participants on the procedures for availing of the university’s Research Data Analysis Services, providing guidance on the process and available support for research data analysis.

Through the activity, the URC reinforced the university’s continuing commitment to strengthening research competence, promoting responsible and ethical research practices, and ensuring the quality and integrity of research outputs across the university.
