Cap and tie ceremony marks new chapter for senior HTM students

HTM cap and tie

In a celebration steeped in tradition and forward-looking purpose, the Cap and Tie Ceremony on May 15, 2025, signified a pivotal moment for senior Hospitality and Tourism Management students as they transition from academic to professional life. The event, which marks the culmination of a series of seminars, stands as both a rite of passage and a heartfelt send-off, symbolizing the students’ readiness to tackle the dynamic challenges of the tourism and hospitality industry.

The festivities began with a send-off mass by Rev. Fr. Albert I. Tamisen, CICM, University Chaplain. This solemn service set a spiritual tone for the days ahead, imbuing the occasion with divine guidance and blessing.

Mr. John Rey C. Pinera, the Intensive Pre-OJT Instructor, took the stage to read about the ceremony’s significance—a tradition proudly initiated nine years ago by Department Head Mr. John Michael C. Ibarra. His words reminded everyone that this celebration is not merely a formality but a meaningful act of sending forth beloved sons and daughters into the real world under the watchful guidance of the Almighty. Recognizing the ceremony’s broader significance, the event was further enriched by the presence of honorary guest speaker Dr. Troy Alexander G. Miano, the regional director of the Department of Tourism Region II. Dr. Miano warmly welcomed everyone to the tourism sector of the Philippines, offering a message of grateful intention and visionary encouragement that resonated deeply with the audience. University President Dr. John Octavious S. Palina warmly welcomed students and their families, underscoring the institution’s commitment to nurturing future leaders.

The day’s program also featured engaging reflections from both students and parents. Tourism Management student Miss Lei-Ann Malcino, one of the top scorers in the comprehensive examinations, delivered a touching message to parents highlighting the rewards of hard work and dedication. Her words prompted a heartfelt response from Mrs. Marites Florendo, mother of Miss Mikee Angelique Florendo. The dialogue continued with insightful messages from Hospitality Management representative Miss Jhunnie Ross Beltran, followed by a gracious reply from Mrs. Ellen Apigo on behalf of Miss Erica Apigo. These exchanges celebrated the collaborative spirit of academic achievement and familial support.

In the second part, the ceremony grew even more solemn with the lighting of the Pascal candle—a symbolic act led by Rev. Fr. Philip Yu Jr., CICM, Vice President for Mission and Identity. This poignant ritual, accompanied by the blessing of the students by their parents and guardians, further underscored the sacred transition from the structured environment of academia to the uncharted terrains of professional life. The awarding of certificates followed, setting the stage for a celebratory toast led by Mr. Ibarra.

Adding a burst of energy and creativity to the proceedings, the senior HTM students treated everyone to a spirited dance performance. The ceremony ended with a closing message from Academic Dean Dr. Regina D. Ramel, CPA, who formally ended the program by wishing all the Senior HTM students success as they embark on their new journey.

The Cap and Tie Ceremony is a testament to the university’s dedication to excellence and the timeless tradition of guiding its students into the professional arena. As these young leaders step into their practicums and eventual careers, they do so with a rich legacy of academic knowledge, a strong foundation of values, and the unwavering support of the university and their families.
